My father, Robert (Bob) Percy Edmunds, was a prisoner of the Japanese during the Second World War. He was captured in Java in 1942 but his family did not receive any news of him until the beginning of 1944.
The Western Gazette, for Friday 7th January 1944, reported as follows:
"Prisoner of War in Japanese Hands
Mrs Edmunds, of Barkers Hill on New Year's-day received a postcard from her youngest son (a prisoner of War in Japanese hands), to say he is quite well and in fact in excellent health. She thanks her many friends for enquiries."
